Building an Online Presence for Individuals

Being relatively new to Social Media, I’ve been trying to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the industry. However, I’ve come to find that you can know everything, every right way and every wrong way to every online scenario, but without a reputation, your not going to pave your way to far into being that ‘go to guy’.

For me, I have found that the following 3 steps can really help you at least start that pathway into building an online presence.

1. Research and Learn
Things are always changing, and it’s quite hard to stay on top of it all. But ensure that you are keeping up with the latest trends and stories is a good way to start developing an understanding of Social Media. I also like to listen into a few different sources for different views as well. Local sources like the Communication Junction, to more mainstream news from Mashable and MarketingMag, all fit into my repertoire of valid sources of information on the latest.

Also, look into different things that you aren’t going to be taught. For example, in my course I will not be taught SEO, so I go out and search for information, tutorials, and find avenues for experimentation to understand it and learn to use it.

2. Get involved with Online Discussion
Get involved with blogs and news articles and trending topics on social networks and get involved with discussions. Learn of others opinions and form your own. There are plenty of places to do so, the discussion is the all over the web on various platforms, so their is no excuse for not putting in your 2 cents worth out there on relevant topics to you.

You can also start the discussion. Start up a blog, and post regularly on relevant and trending topics. Engage readers into commenting, or at least being interested enough in your writing to read again. There are plenty of various platforms to do so, like WordPress and blogger, and you can also post up blogs to sites like Digg and Reditt for further exposure.

3. Keep learning
Never stop learning, keep researching, keep staying up to date on the latest trending topics, keep getting involved with online topics. The trick is to stay relevant and engaging, that’s how you get noticed! And whilst I only talk from a social media and online marketing point of view, this is the same for any online ventures. If you stay relevant to your target audience and what they want to take time to read, and engage with them as well are important factors into creating a strong online presence.

These are my top three, do you have any more?
